Liverpool great Gerrard impressed by England captaincy job of Man Utd star Rooney

Steven Gerrard admits Wayne Rooney has done a brilliant job as captain of England since he took over.

The Manchester United striker took the armband from Liverpool legend Gerrard following his retirement after last year's World Cup in Brazil and the work the 29-year-old has done has not been lost on the ex-skipper.

"He's done a good job," Gerrard, who now plays for Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS, said ahead of England's Euro2016 qualifier in San Marino this weekend.

"Wayne Rooney commands respect because of the player he is. And to be fair to Wayne I've been really impressed since he took things over.

"I'm sure he'll be judged as a captain after the tournament. What type of job will he do during the most pressurised and intense time?"
