Fight Club OC Closes Out The Year With Winter Chills, Blood Spills & Striking Chills!
Fight Club OC said goodbye to 2025 from the Hangar at the OC Fair & Events Center in Costa Mesa, CA on December 11th. The crowd was ebullient as everyone knew that of all the fight cards throughout the year, this one just might be the most special.
Opening the show was a 4 round, Light Heavyweight boxing match between Los Angeles’s Patrick Ogbebor (2-0) vs Marc Anthony Mendoza (0-1) in his pro debut from Long Beach. These two 175 pounders opened the show strong as they met in the center of the ring, dug their feet in, and went to work. It soon became apparent that Mendoza was in over his head and Ogbebor dropped him hard in the first round. Mendoza rose gamely but was soon battered to the canvas again and the fight was halted.
From there we transitioned to a 3 round MMA bout in the flyweight class with Dante Patron (1-1) from San Diego battling on Robert Duran (1-2) from Fullerton. These two mixed martial arts specialists engaged in a bout that could best be described as controlled choas. Each fighter gave as good as they got with takedowns, holds, striking and just about anything else you might want in an MMA match. In the end, Duran did just a little bit more and edged his tough foe in a solid contest.
Moving back into boxing, fans were treated to a 4 round heavyweight bout between Los Angeles’s Phillip Triantafillo (4-4 1KO) vs. Las Vegas’s Ryan Diaz (1-2). The big boys came to rumble and they sure did in this sloppy, foul filled, 4 round affair that seemed to push referee Thomas Taylor to his absolute limit. Diaz was game, tough, and not afraid to stand in the trenches but Triantafillo pressed the action, moved a lot, and just plainly did more. It wasn’t the most exciting fight, but each fighter came with heart, they were there to the end, and ultimately, Triantafillo eventually did enough to win a decision.
Staying with boxing, middleweight Dante Kirkman (7-0 3KOs) from Pablo Alto went to head to head with DePriest Johnson (4-10) of Texas. This was a measured affair with Kirkman pressing the action, and Johnson moving away and giving angles for much of the fight. As the rounds wore on, it became clear that Kirkman was getting stronger and Johnson was fading. This became even more apparent in the 5th, as Kirkman dropped Johnson and then cruised to a 6 round decision.
Returning to MMA saw flyweights Miguel Ceja (3-5) of Anaheim go even up with John Andrus (4-1) of Chula Vista. This flyweight bout was a very measured contest in which each fighter did their share of leg kicks. It was 15 minutes of essentially stand-up fury with all of the rounds showcasing portions where the fighters had their moments. As a result, it made it very difficult to score, but in the end Andrus was rewarded for the damage he did and the shots he landed with the decision.
This night’s 6 round, Tequila Mandala Young Champions bout took place between cruiserweight’s Juan Higuera (7-2 4KOs) of Los Angeles and Ventura’s Anthony De La Cruz (5-0 4KOs). The junior heavies put on a great tussle as De La Cruz banked the early rounds with a pair of well placed right hands. However, after he dropped De La Cruz, Higuera came on and made a case that his mid-to-late rounds surge could crown him the victor. In the end, the judges awarded De La Cruz with a unanimous decision in a bout that was razor thin close.
Ending the night was a 6 round, lightweight bout featuring Hawaii’s Dalis Kaleiopu (8-0 5KOs) against Chula Vista’s Angel Luna (20-18-1 12KOs) from Chula Vista. Ending the show at Fight Club OC is a special task and let’s just say that Luna was game, but Kaleiopu made very short work of his efforts. Mixing uppercuts and straight punches, Luna was dropped and the ref felt he’d had enough so bout was waved off.
