Bollywood's top director roped in seven superstars, locked Rs 250 crore as budget, but dropped it because..., he is now...
Bollywood has churned out many big budget films. But here's the story of one big film that everyone was excited for, however, it never got made. The film had seven stars playing pivotal roles and was to transport audiences back to the Mughal era. With great enthusiasm, a top Bollywood filmmaker announced the film in 2020, but the project could never take off. It was put on the backburner and until today, there is no update on it whatsoever. Can you guess the film?
It is Takht by Karan Johar. Even before the shooting could begin, a lot of hype was created around this mega-budget film. The movie was supposed to star Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Anil Kapoor. Reportedly, the story was based on the two sons of Shah Jahan - Aurangzeb and Dara Shikoh. It was expected to be an epic period drama that depicted the fight for the Mughal throne. It was considered as Karan Johar's passion project. The release date of Takht was also locked.
Takht was supposed to release on December 24, 2021 but cameras could not start rolling for the project. There are several reports speculating the reason behind Takht being shelved. One of the reasons is the postponement caused due to COVID-19. Another reason is the backlash received by Karan Johar over nepotism; especially after the demise of Sushant Singh Rajput. Takht featured star kids including Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Janhvi Kapoor.
Post the announcement, the filmmaker was trolled for casting star kids; it intensified post Sushant Singh Rajput's demise.
Karan Johar has been often targeted for being the 'flagbearer' of nepotism in Bollywood. Post Sushant Singh Rajput's untimely demise, Karan Johar faced incessant trolling and backlash on social media. So much so that the director distanced himself from social media for being subjected to intense hatred. He even refrained from making public appearances and stayed away from the media.
All is in the past now. While the story of Takht still remains a mystery, Karan Johar is back to making films. The last movie that he directed was Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani that starred Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
