Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. has announced that three of its vehicles – the Thar ROXX, XUV 3XO, and XUV400 – have secured 5-star safety ratings from the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat-NCAP). This achievement underscores Mahindra’s commitment to advancing safety in the Indian automotive market, meeting rigorous safety standards across various SUV segments.

Thar ROXX: Leading in Body-on-Frame Safety

Mahindra’s Thar ROXX has made history as the first body-on-frame SUV to receive a 5-star Bharat-NCAP rating. In adult occupant protection (AOP), it scored an impressive 31.09 out of 32, while child occupant protection (COP) was rated at 45 out of 49. With these ratings, Thar ROXX achieves the highest points for any internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle tested by Bharat-NCAP to date.

The Thar ROXX’s comprehensive safety suite includes six airbags, 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Notable advanced safety features include Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and a 360-degree surround view system with Blind View Monitor. A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and Brake Locking Differential (BLD) further enhance safety, particularly in off-road conditions, for which the Thar is well known.

XUV 3XO: Compact SUV Safety Benchmarks

The XUV 3XO also received a 5-star Bharat-NCAP rating, reflecting Mahindra’s efforts to prioritize safety across different SUV models. This compact SUV achieved 29.36 out of 32 in adult occupant protection and 43 out of 49 in child occupant protection, signaling strong all-around safety for families.

Built with high-strength steel, the XUV 3XO includes standard safety features such as six airbags, 3-point seatbelts for all seats, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and ESC. Additional Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) features such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and Lane Keep Assist add further layers of protection. These features work in conjunction with all-around disc brakes and a 360-degree surround view system to help reduce the risk of collisions and improve control in various driving conditions.

XUV400: Pioneering Safety in Electric Vehicles

Mahindra’s electric SUV, the XUV400, joins the 5-star Bharat-NCAP-rated lineup, showcasing strong occupant protection with scores of 30.377/32 in adult occupant safety and 43/49 for child safety. Safety features in the XUV400 include six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and all-around disc brakes. A reverse camera with adaptive guidelines is also part of the package, enhancing driver awareness and maneuvering ease. The 5-star safety rating highlights the XUV400’s potential as a reliable EV option for Indian roads.

Future Outlook

As India’s safety norms evolve, Mahindra aims to maintain its focus on integrating advanced safety features across its portfolio. “Safety has always been at the core of our product development,” said R. Velusamy, President of Automotive Technology and Product Development at Mahindra. The company has pioneered safety initiatives like introducing six airbags in 2011 and continues to push for higher safety standards across its vehicles.
