"COP 29 in Baku: Hiding Ethnic Cleansing" conference held at European Parliament
ArmInfo. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Cypriot MEP Loukas Fourlas and the European office of the ARF "Dashnaktsutyun", a conference titled "COP 29 in Baku: Hiding Ethnic Cleansing" was held at the European Parliament on November 5th.
As reported by the Central Bureau of "Hay Dat", the event was attended by MEPs representing various political groups, Belgian politicians, diplomats, representatives of civil society, journalists and members of the Armenian community of Belgium. The conference invited speakers include Simon Papuashvili, the Head of Eastern Europe and South Caucasus Programs at the Organization for International Cooperation for Human Rights, Catalina De La Sota, an expert in international law, Siranush Sargsyan, a journalist from Artsakh, and David Vardanyan, Ruben Vardanyan's son.
The conference aimed to address various issues related to the hosting of COP 29 in Azerbaijan. Specifically, it aimed to explore the potential of holding the conference in Baku on its global goals, considering the events taking place in the region and the ethnic cleansing committed by Azerbaijan against the indigenous Armenian population of Artsakh. The conference highlighted the Azerbaijani government's campaign to forcibly displace the Armenians of Artsakh, along with the country's human rights violations and egregious attitude towards the environment. Discussions primarily focused on highlighting Azerbaijan's destructive actions in the areas of politics, ecology, and human rights. Gaspar Karapetyan, the President of the European Office of Hay Dat, emphasized the significance of holding this conference as an important message to the European delegations preparing to participate in COP 29. He emphasized that environmental rights and security cannot be separated from fundamental human rights and freedoms.
"Azerbaijan, given its poor state of human rights and war crimes, should not have been allowed to host this important event, which it likely intended to use to mask its genocidal identity. We once again express our gratitude to the MEPs, particularly to Lucas Fourlas, the President of the Friendship Group with Armenia, for holding this conference," he added.
Note that the day before, 52 members of the European Parliament issued a statement demanding Azerbaijan to release Armenian prisoners of war and hostages, ensure the protection of the cultural heritage of Artsakh and withdraw the Azerbaijani Armed Forces from the occupied territories of Armenia
