Royal Enfield Bear 650 Launched at INR 3.39 Lakh
Royal Enfield has launched the Bear 650, a new scrambler-style motorcycle, at the EICMA show, inspired by a classic racing legacy. Drawing from Eddie Mulder’s 1960 Big Bear Run victory, this model combines retro styling with modern engineering. With bookings starting on November 10, 2024, in India, the Bear 650 offers an accessible price point of INR 3.39 lakhs (ex-showroom, Chennai), designed to appeal to both urban and off-road riders.
Bear 650: A Tribute
The Bear 650’s heritage traces back to Mulder’s iconic race through California’s Mojave Desert. At just 16, Mulder, known as “Fast Eddie,” conquered the harsh, rule-free course on a Royal Enfield Fury, leaving a mark on desert racing history. This spirit of resilience and instinct is infused into the Bear 650, which combines elements of classic scrambler design with enhanced durability for varied terrains.
Powertrain
Powered by Royal Enfield’s established 650cc parallel twin engine, the Bear 650 promises strong mid-range performance and torque, delivering 47 bhp at 7,250 rpm and 56.5 Nm of torque at 5,150 rpm. Equipped with a 2-1 exhaust system, the model boosts powerband breadth while reducing weight, further enhancing its scrambler styling. The combination of a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel with dual-purpose tires and a ground clearance of 184mm supports moderate off-road handling and stability on city streets.
Design and Features
The Bear 650’s design reflects classic scrambler aesthetics, featuring a contoured scrambler seat, high rear loop, and an available competition-style number board. These details evoke the visual cues of 1960s desert racing while modern elements like LED lighting, a TFT Tripper Dash, and Google Maps integration ensure functionality for contemporary riders. Five colorways—Boardwalk White, Petrol Green, Wild Honey, Golden Shadow, and a commemorative “Two Four Nine” paying homage to Mulder’s race number—provide options for a personalized look.
The Bear 650 is built on a reinforced chassis with Showa suspension: USD big piston forks at the front with 130mm travel, and twin-tube RSUs at the rear with 115mm travel, offering stability over mixed terrain. For braking, the model includes a 320mm front disc and a 270mm rear disc, with an option to disable rear ABS for off-road riding. Ergonomic features such as a wide handlebar, neutral footpeg positioning, and a seat that accommodates rider movement further enhance its versatility.
Additional features include a four-inch TFT display with phone connectivity, USB-C charging, and Royal Enfield’s Wingman Connectivity for real-time tracking and navigation. These additions are intended to make the Bear 650 suitable for both daily commuting and longer, adventurous journeys.
Available in India from mid-November, the Bear 650’s pricing starts at INR 3.39 lakhs, positioning it as a competitively priced scrambler in the mid-size motorcycle segment. The Bear 650 is intended for riders who appreciate a blend of classic design and practical features, reflecting Royal Enfield’s commitment to heritage-inspired, accessible motorcycling.
