Volkswagen Virtus Crosses 50,000 Sales Milestone in India

0

Volkswagen India has announced that its Virtus sedan has achieved a major sales milestone, crossing 50,000 units in domestic wholesale sales within 28 months of its launch. This accomplishment solidifies the Virtus’ position as India’s best-selling premium sedan in 2024, with over 17,000 units sold this year alone.

Key Milestone for Volkswagen

The achievement of 50,000 sales for the Virtus is part of a larger success story for Volkswagen in India. The Virtus, along with its sibling, the Taigun, have both contributed significantly to the brand’s overall growth in the country. In the second quarter of 2024, Volkswagen surpassed one lakh domestic sales of these models. The two cars combined make up about 18.5% of the company’s domestic sales volume over the past three years, as part of Volkswagen’s India 2.0 strategy.

Performance and Safety at the Core

The Volkswagen Virtus has built its reputation on delivering strong performance and high safety standards. The sedan is available with two engine options—a 1.0-liter TSI engine and a more powerful 1.5-liter TSI Evo engine. The Virtus also boasts a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating, providing customers with peace of mind when it comes to road safety. Standard safety features include six airbags and more than 40 safety systems, making it a standout in its segment.

In addition to its everyday performance, the Virtus also made headlines with a national record for a 24-hour endurance drive. The Virtus GT Plus drove 4,654.48 km in 24 hours, further showcasing its reliability and endurance.

Recent Updates and Market Appeal

Volkswagen has kept customer interest high with the recent introduction of the Virtus GT Line and Virtus GT Plus Sport, aimed at amplifying excitement around the sedan during the festive season. These new variants cater to enthusiasts looking for sportier aesthetics and additional features, helping maintain the Virtus’ competitive edge in the market.

Speaking on the milestone, Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, highlighted the continued popularity of the Virtus. “The Virtus continues to resonate strongly with our customers, and crossing the 50,000 sales mark is a testament to the product’s success in the Indian market,” Gupta said.

Outlook for the Indian Market

Volkswagen’s success with the Virtus comes in a challenging segment where sedans have generally seen declining sales, as customers increasingly prefer SUVs. Despite this, the Virtus has managed to carve out a niche for itself, primarily due to its strong focus on performance, safety, and premium features. However, it’s worth noting that while the Virtus has done well in the premium sedan category, Volkswagen’s overall sales in India have faced ups and downs in the past.

Historically, Volkswagen has struggled to maintain consistent growth in the Indian market, where competition from other global and domestic brands is fierce. Models like the Polo and Vento had early success but later saw sales taper off. The Virtus’ ongoing performance will depend on how well Volkswagen can maintain customer interest and adapt to changing market preferences, especially in a landscape dominated by SUVs.
