Mercedes-Benz E-Class Local Production LWB Begins ahead of launch

Mercedes-Benz has officially commenced local production of the much-anticipated Long Wheelbase (LWB) E-Class at its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. This marks a significant step in the brand’s ongoing commitment to the Indian market, with the new E-Class set to make its debut on October 9, 2024.

The Long Wheelbase E-Class has long been a staple of Mercedes-Benz’s lineup in India, recognized as the most successful luxury business sedan in the country. Santosh Iyer, Managing Director & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, emphasized the importance of this model: “The LWB New E-Class underscores our pioneering spirit of making in India. We are confident that the ‘Made in India, for India’ E-Class will set new standards in luxury, intuitive technology, and safety.”

Production and Homologation

The all-new LWB E-Class 200 has successfully received the CMVR Type Approval Certificate from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) after extensive testing across various locations, including Pune, Chennai, and international sites in Germany and Spain. These tests covered critical aspects such as BS 6-2 emission compliance, crash safety, pedestrian protection, and equipment functionality.

Notably, India is the only global market producing the LWB E-Class in its right-hand drive (RHD) configuration, highlighting the country’s strategic importance in Mercedes-Benz’s global operations. The company has been manufacturing the E-Class in India since 1995, marking the first vehicle to roll off its assembly line.

Technological Innovations and Features

The sixth-generation LWB E-Class promises a luxurious driving experience, characterized by a first-class cabin equipped with advanced personalization and interactivity options. The model features cutting-edge technology, including the latest MBUX infotainment system and high-end safety features that are synonymous with the Mercedes-Benz brand.

Vyankatesh Kulkarni, Executive Director and Head of Operations at Mercedes-Benz India, noted the significance of local production: “The start of production for the New Long Wheelbase E-Class is an important milestone that reiterates our world-class manufacturing capabilities and commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Our production facilities integrate advanced automation and localization, ensuring the highest quality standards.”

Key production features include:

  • Automated Bodyshop: The new bodyshop automated line for the rear floor utilizes state-of-the-art robotics and intelligent automation, setting high standards for precision and efficiency in the Indian manufacturing sector.
  • Innovative Safety Features: The E-Class introduces a center airbag designed to protect occupants during side collisions, a significant advancement in passenger safety.
  • MBUX Super-screen: This feature includes a two-stage blocking system for the passenger display, allowing the driver a distraction-free environment while enabling the front passenger to enjoy entertainment options such as gaming and streaming.

Commitment to Localization

Mercedes-Benz has emphasized its commitment to sourcing various components locally, enhancing its ‘Make in India’ footprint. The robust supply chain supports production, connecting diverse regions globally to deliver exceptional quality to Indian customers.

As the LWB E-Class prepares for its market launch, it is clear that Mercedes-Benz is not only reinforcing its legacy in India but is also setting a new benchmark for luxury vehicles. With bookings currently open, the upcoming model is expected to attract discerning customers seeking a blend of sophistication, technology, and safety.
