Armenia, Iran FMs discuss unblocking regional communications

ArmInfo. At a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the 79th session of the General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan underscored the importance of Iran's strong stance on the unconditional respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of Armenia, expressed on the highest level As ArmInfo was informed by the press service of the Foreign Ministry of Armenia, in this vein, Mirzoyan reiterated Armenia's strong political will to achieve lasting peace in the region.  In the context of establishing lasting peace in the South Caucasus, the Foreign Minister of Armenia briefed his Iranian counterpart on the latest negotiations on the peace treaty with Azerbaijan.

 

The Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Iran discussed issues of unblocking regional economic and transport communications. In this regard, Mirzoyan emphasized Armenia's firm approach to opening communications in accordance with the principles laid down in the Armenian government's "Crossroads of Peace" concept.  The Foreign Ministers commended on the high level of friendly relations between Armenia and Iran and outlined ways to fully realize the potential for further cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

 

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Mirzoyan also held meetings with his counterparts from Egypt and Estonia, Badr Abdelatty and Margus Tsaghkna.  Mirzoyan discussed issues on the bilateral agenda as well as topics related to regional security with his Egyptian counterpart. The parties commended the high-level political dialogue and friendly relations between Armenia and Egypt. Mirzoyan and Abdelatty outlined the specific areas where there is potential for further development of cooperation and expressed their readiness to jointly contribute to its maximum extent.

 

The issue  of cooperation on multilateral platforms were also discussed.  The Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Egypt exchanged views on the developments in the Middle East.  Mirzoyan reaffirmed Armenia's principled position regarding the immediate cessation of hostilities, non- targeting of the civilian population, and settlement on the basis of the "two-state" principle.  In the context of the security situation in the South Caucasus, Mirzoyan presented his Egyptian counterpart with the latest developments regarding the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

 

He also presented this position at the meeting with Tsakhkna, noting Yerevan's commitment to signing a peace treaty in the shortest possible time.  The interlocutors also exchanged views on the steps taken towards the development of the Armenia-EU new partnership program and the upcoming activities.  Mirzoyan expressed his gratitude to Estonia for its support of the EU Council's decision taken in July to launch the visa liberalization dialogue and expressed hope that the further joint steps will help achieve tangible results for the citizens of Armenia in line with the European aspirations.
