CA Governor Declares War on Deepfakes
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill outlawing election “deepfake” videos.

California has a lot of problems and its leaders have few solutions, but rest assured their Governor is working hard to crack down on parody videos.
Governor Newsom signed a set of bills to outlaw the creation and publication of so-called “deepfake” AI-generated material related to elections 120 days before Election Day and 60 days thereafter.
The law takes effect immediately and empowers the courts to stop distribution of contraband parody material and impose civil penalties.
One of the bills requires major social media companies to remove the content. That bill will be enacted next year.
Another bill in the set requires political campaigns to publicly disclose if ads are altered by AI.
These moves were set in motion after Gavin got in an online spat with X owner Elon Musk over an AI-altered video of Kamala Harris.
Homelessness, crime, and taxes might be out of control in California but Gavin will make sure deepfakes don’t see the light of day.
