Yamaha MT-09 India Launch Under Evaluation: A Powerful Naked Streetfighter on the Horizon

0

Yamaha is actively expanding its premium motorcycle lineup in India. Following the launch of the YZF-R3 and MT-03, the brand is now setting the stage for the introduction of a more powerful naked middleweight streetfighter—the MT-09.

2024 Yamaha MT-09: A Sharper, More Aggressive Design

The Yamaha MT-09 destined for India will be the latest version of the bike, unveiled as the 2024 model at EICMA 2023. This updated iteration adopts a sharper design language reminiscent of its larger sibling, the MT-10. The new styling is evident from the front, where the bike features a vertically stacked LED headlamp design flanked by LED DRLs, contributing to its aggressive and menacing appearance. The headlight cowl, reminiscent of Iron Man’s mask, adds a distinctive and futuristic touch to the bike’s character. Other notable design updates include a sleeker headlight cowl, a larger fuel tank, and a streamlined tail section.

Enhanced Hardware for Superior Performance

Complementing the design overhaul, the MT-09 comes equipped with upgraded hardware. One of the significant enhancements is the addition of Brembo brakes, a first for this model. The front USD fork and rear mono-shock, sourced from KYB, have also been refined to offer improved spring rates and damping. Mechanically, the MT-09 retains its robust 890 cc CP3 three-cylinder engine, delivering 117.3 bhp and 93 Nm of torque, ensuring no shortage of power.

Advanced Features and Cutting-Edge Technology

The MT-09 includes a new color TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity and navigation, along with intuitive new switchgear. On the electronics front, the bike boasts a six-axis IMU-supported traction control system, slide control, ABS, and three riding modes—Street, Sport, and Rain. Additionally, the bike offers two customizable riding modes for tailored performance.

Yamaha’s Revolutionary Y-AMT Transmission

One of the most anticipated features that could accompany the MT-09’s Indian debut is Yamaha’s semi-automatic transmission, Y-AMT. This innovative gearbox employs dual actuators—one for the clutch and the other for shifting gears—allowing automatic gear changes in D/D+ modes. Riders can also opt for manual gear changes using switches on the left-hand switch cube.

Expected Launch and Pricing

As for its launch, Yamaha is expected to make an announcement soon. While the exact date is yet to be confirmed, the MT-09 is anticipated to hit the Indian market by the first half of September. Priced around ₹14 lakh, the MT-09 will be imported as a completely built unit, following the same strategy as the YZF-R3 and MT-03, making it a premium offering in the segment.
