Bowser Administration Kicks Off Month-Long Celebration of DC’s Creative Community
(Washington, DC) – Today, the Bowser Administration is kicking off 202Creates, a month-long celebration of DC’s creative community. Mayor Muriel Bowser launched 202Creates in September 2016 to amplify, celebrate, and highlight local artists and creatives through a wide array of events and celebrations across all eight wards. The annual celebration is led by the Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment (OCTFME), the Creative Affairs Office, and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.
“Washington, DC is a vibrant creative epicenter, from performing and visual arts to film and fashion, culinary arts, theater, and more. September is our opportunity to shine a spotlight on the artists who contribute so much to our city,” said Mayor Bowser. “By bringing people together through concerts, festivals, fashion, and more, our creative community brings so much energy and excitement into our city and that energy is fueling our comeback.”
Tonight, OCTFME is hosting a kickoff event featuring live performances from popular local talent such as Noochie, the Allure Band, Heru The Violinist, and more. The event will showcase art and fashion activations and will be emceed by veteran radio personality Antonio the Cuban Cigar Smoker.
“DC is the capital of cool, culture, and creativity. 202Creates is a testament to the incredible talent and innovation of our local artists and creatives,” said LaToya Foster, OCTFME Director. “Mayor Bowser’s unwavering support has been instrumental in fostering an environment where the arts and creativity can truly flourish.”
Since its launch in September 2016, 202Creates has become a key pillar in celebrating the wide-ranging talents that contribute to Washington, DC’s thriving $13.8 billion creative economy. This initiative shines a spotlight on the incredible array of individuals who fuel our city’s vibrant cultural landscape. From the soulful melodies of our musicians, the dynamic performances of our artists, to the innovative works of filmmakers, and the culinary magic of our chefs, 202Creates honors the creativity and passion that drive both the cultural richness and economic vitality of the District.
