Skoda Auto India Reveals Name of Its Upcoming Compact SUV: Kylaq

Skoda Auto India has unveiled the name of its highly anticipated all-new compact SUV, marking a significant milestone in the company’s journey in India. The vehicle will be known as the Kylaq, following an extensive nationwide campaign that allowed fans and customers to participate in the naming process.

A Name Chosen by the Public

The Kylaq name was selected through Skoda’s innovative “Name Your Skoda” campaign, which invited contributions from across the country. Launched in February 2024, the campaign received over 200,000 entries, reflecting strong public engagement and enthusiasm. The name Kylaq, derived from the Sanskrit word for crystal, was chosen for its alignment with Skoda’s tradition of naming SUVs, starting with ‘K’ and ending with ‘Q’.

Petr Janeba, Brand Director of Skoda Auto India, emphasized the significance of the campaign, stating, “Our new compact SUV Kylaq is for the people of India. We wanted them to be part of every milestone of our biggest-ever launch in the country. The ‘Name Your Skoda’ campaign aimed at inculcating a sense of pride and belonging among participants and potential customers. The results are humbling with over 200,000 entries. It reinforces our legacy in India and showcases the great affinity people have towards brand Skoda. The naming process of a car is important for us. And this upcoming all-new compact SUV represents the ultimate milestone within the fastest growing and biggest segment in India. With the Kylaq, people, customers and fans have themselves named our newest family member, which is developed jointly by the teams in India and Europe, and will be locally manufactured.”

Rewards for Participants

The winner of the naming contest will become the first owner of the Kylaq when it launches in 2025. Additionally, ten other participants will win an exclusive trip to Prague, including a tour of the Skoda Museum and the city. The winners will be announced at 2 PM today across Skoda Auto India’s social media channels.

The Kylaq: What to Expect

The Skoda Kylaq, set to debut in 2025, will be Skoda Auto India’s first compact SUV. Built on the MQB-AO-IN platform, which also underpins the Kushaq SUV and the Slavia sedan, the Kylaq will offer a versatile and dynamic driving experience. Developed jointly by teams in India and Europe, it focuses on local production, affordability, and a smooth ownership experience.

The Kylaq will introduce Skoda’s Modern Solid design language to the Indian market, featuring high ground clearance and a design optimized for rough terrain. Notable design elements will include a hexagonal pattern on the side and rear, and precise DRL light signatures. The compact SUV is currently undergoing rigorous testing across India in preparation for its production launch.

Continuing Skoda’s Naming Tradition

Skoda’s tradition of naming its SUVs began with the Kodiaq in 2017, reflecting the grandeur of the Kodiak bear and its Alaskan habitat. This tradition continued with the Kushaq, derived from the Sanskrit word for emperor. The Kylaq continues this legacy, combining Skoda’s heritage with a modern touch.
