Hay Dat Lebanese Committee calls on UN not to hold COP29 in Baku
ArmInfo. On the eve of the UN Climate Summit (COP29), the Lebanese Hay Dat Committee sent letters to the embassies of about 40 participating countries accredited in Beirut, explaining why Azerbaijan should not receive the status of host of such a conference not only from a moral but also from a legal point of view.
This letter, in the form of a memorandum, states that, taking into account the policy pursued by the Azerbaijani authorities, Baku cannot be considered as a place where issues related to human rights and ecology will be discussed.
"Azerbaijan is a terrorist state that has committed war crimes, ethnic cleansing of the entire population of Artsakh, which was preceded by a 10-month total blockade," the letter says.
"Hay Dat" also drew attention to the fact that the Azerbaijani authorities continue to hold Armenian prisoners of war and civilians in prisons.
"Keeping Armenian hostages and prisoners of war in Baku prisons is a serious warning to those who are thinking of realizing their right to return, as provided for by international law.
Therefore, labeling Azerbaijan's November initiative as a "Peace COP" is at the very least disgusting and shocking, since it is aimed at supporting the idea of achieving peace through prior aggression and genocide," the letter addressed to the ambassadors says.
A number of authoritative human rights organizations have called on the UN to refrain from holding the Climate Summit in Baku due to the fact that this country does not meet the stated goals of this summit. However, this call has remained unheeded by the World Organization.
Experts are inclined to believe that by holding this significant summit in Baku, the international community is untying the hands of the Azerbaijani authorities in terms of further violations of universal human rights.
