Rolls-Royce Reveals Phantom Scintilla Special Edition at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

0

Rolls-Royce has introduced a new special edition of its Phantom luxury sedan, the Phantom Scintilla, at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This release comes as the brand celebrates its 120th anniversary, marking the occasion with a limited run of just 10 vehicles. The Phantom Scintilla pays tribute to Rolls-Royce’s iconic Spirit of Ecstasy and the heritage that has shaped the brand for over a century.

A Nod to the Spirit of Ecstasy

The Phantom Scintilla is designed as a homage to the Spirit of Ecstasy, the emblem that has adorned every Rolls-Royce grille since 1910. The design of this emblem was originally inspired by the Winged Victory of Samothrace, an ancient Greek sculpture that depicts Nike, the goddess of victory. This sculpture left a strong impression on Rolls-Royce Managing Director Claude Johnson, leading him to commission sculptor Charles Sykes to create a mascot that reflected the brand’s values of grace, silence, and subtle power.

Sykes drew inspiration for the Spirit of Ecstasy from Eleanor Thornton, secretary to Lord Montagu, resulting in the iconic figure known today. The Phantom Scintilla derives its name from the Latin word for ‘spark,’ symbolizing a brief yet bright flash, much like the enduring appeal of Rolls-Royce.

Exterior Design

The exterior of the Phantom Scintilla features a two-tone bespoke paint scheme, with the upper body finished in Andalusian White and the lower body in Thracian Blue. A hand-painted double pinstripe runs the length of the vehicle, adding a subtle touch of elegance to the design.

Interior Craftsmanship

The interior of the Phantom Scintilla has been designed with attention to detail, with the layout taking over two and a half years to develop. The starlight headliner, a signature feature of Rolls-Royce, is crafted in a bespoke pattern that enhances the sense of motion within the cabin.

The doors and seats are decorated with 36 sections of embroidered patterns, totaling 633,000 stitches. The upholstery is made from a twill fabric with a reflective sheen, contributing to the dynamic interplay of textures and colors.

The dashboard features an art piece called “Celestial Pulse,” a collection of seven aluminum “ribbons” that crisscross in a design reminiscent of the Spirit of Ecstasy. The rear picnic tables continue the theme with a delicate graphic capturing the Spirit of Ecstasy’s fluidity, applied using a masking technique and finished with a matte lacquer for a subtle color effect.

Limited Production

The Phantom Scintilla will be produced in a limited run of 10 vehicles. While Rolls-Royce has not disclosed pricing, it is expected to be among the most expensive Phantoms delivered to North America. All 10 examples have already been sold, underscoring the vehicle’s exclusivity.

As Rolls-Royce marks its 120th year, the Phantom Scintilla stands as a reflection of the brand’s commitment to blending history, craftsmanship, and luxury in its vehicles.
