On a podcast with Nikhil Kamat, the Rockstar actor revealed that his father would keep him on a tight budget when he went to New York to story at The School of Visual Arts. In the podcast, Ranbir Kapoor discussed his father's strict budget and his privileged background, revealing that his father would provide him with enough money for two meals a day. He explained that Rishi had kept him on a very tight budget. Despite coming from a privileged background, his budget was strict enough that he often had to rely on McDonald's dollar menu for meals, spending around $2 for lunch and $2 for dinner.

However, Ranbir believes that his father wanted him to live like a student and not as a superstar's son. He wanted to teach him the value of money. Kapoor also spoke about his college life in Mumbai.
