ArmInfo.Holding a referendum on Armenia's  joining the European Union makes no sense. RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated on July 1 during the Armenian Forum for Democracy.

Especially since the Armenian people have European aspirations, the head of government. "They say that we should hold a referendum to show that the people support the idea of becoming a member of the EU, while I myself stated in the European Parliament that Armenia is ready to be as close to the EU as the EU considers possible. If I thought that the people of Armenia did not share this idea, I would not have made this statement. If we hold a referendum, we must also conduct a campaign. In this case, people will ask us questions: how and when, does the EU want it or not? People will ask whether the EU is ready to accept us? I cannot answer this question, because processes are taking place in the EU countries that, at a minimum, raise questions related to the elections. We have already declared our political will at the highest level," Nikol Pashinyan said.

Earlier, four extra-parliamentary parties called for a referendum on Armenia's  joining the European Union. In their statement, party Tigran Khzmalyan (European Party of Armenia), Aram  Sargsyan ("Republic" party), Arman Babajanyan (For The Republic  Party) and Levon Shirinyan (Christian Democratic Party), noted that "based on geopolitical processes and internal Armenian needs" they propose to organize a referendum in the next 3-4 months. In May of this year, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, announced his desire to see Armenia join the European Union this year. On February 29, RA National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan announced Armenia's readiness to become a candidate for EU membership. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, in turn, said in an interview with Turkish TRT on March 8 that "the Armenian people really have European aspirations."
