Ye olde 27-inch 1440p gaming monitor form factor is proving remarkably resilient, isn't it? The OLED model is the LG UltraGear 27GX790B-B. As above, the basics are 27 inches and 1440p, the details include 540 Hz refresh at 1440p, with a 720 Hz alt mode running at 720p. Factor in OLED's characteristically zippy 0.03 ms pixel response and let's just say this monitor gets a shift on. And then some.Notably, it sports LG's latest and brightest panel tech. That means a full-screen rating of 335 nits, well up on the 250 nits and 275 nits of earlier LG OLEDs. The HDR certification also gets a bump from True Black 400 to True Black 500, again reflecting the punchier panel tech.As for the IPS panel, it's the LG UltraGear 27G610A-B. That's a 1440p IPS model with 200 Hz refresh that sells for £199 on its own. It's rated at 1 ms for pixel response, 400 nits for brightness and has DisplayHDR 400 certification. A few years ago, that would have been a very, very nice little gaming panel in its own right. Now you're getting one thrown in, gratis. As for how good a deal this, the devil is in the detail. You can find, for instance, the LG UltraGear 27GX790A-B on sale in the UK for about £699, which suggests this combo might not exactly be a steal. But note the all critical 'A' in that alpha-numeric jumble. That's the older-gen 27-inch UltraGear OLED that runs at 480 Hz, not 540 Hz, and also lacks the 720p dual model. It's also less bright at 275 nits full screen and only gets True Black HDR 400 certification. Those are pretty significant upgrades that you'd think would merit a bit more than the upgrade from 'A' to 'B' at the end of an indecipherable sequence of numbers and letters. But that's monitor branding for you these days. Confusing, but not enough to detract from the core deal here, which basically sees you pay normal price for LG's latest super-fast and brighter 27-inch OLED and get a decent IPS panel thrown in for free.
