Chip Kelly impressive in introductory news conference

Is there a correlation between how impressive a head coach is at his introductory news conference and how good he coaches?

[...] based on the Chip Kelly news conference Wednesday, I’m predicting sunny skies for the 49ers and their fans.

Not because he was a swell fellow to me and my media pals, but because if he’s a semblance of that same person with his 49ers, you can forget about a player mutiny the first week of training camp.

Kelly, at odds with some of the harsh Yelp reviews slung at him on his way out of Philadelphia, came off as likable, personable and accountable, without being vapid or slick.

When it was mentioned that several 49ers have had brushes with the law in recent years, Kelly said, “I believe it’s a privilege to play in the National Football League, and that with that privilege goes responsibility.”

If it means he won’t suit up a player who just got drunk and crashed his truck into a tree the day before the game, I say, “Whoo!”

Kelly, rather than firing back, said he would learn from his Philly experience.

Kelly’s examination of his Eagles’ failure, he said, wouldn’t be soul-searching as much as it would be “an autopsy,” a study of “toxicology reports.”

In making the point that every coach gets fired eventually, Kelly said, “We rent our office space.”
