Kazakhstan's population as of January 1, 2026 announced
Tengrinews.kz – The Bureau of National Statistics has released Kazakhstan’s population as of 1 January 2026. The corresponding publication appeared on the official website of the Bureau.
According to the statistical data, Kazakhstan’s population as of 1 January 2026 amounted to 20,495,975 people. Over the year, the number of residents increased by 212,576.
The population has exceeded 2 million in Turkestan Region and Almaty:
Turkestan Region – 2,148,658 people (the population decreased by 5,383 over the year);Almaty – 2,347,924 people (the population increased by 55,869).
More than 1 million people live in:
Astana – 1,638,233 people (up by 109,530);
Almaty Region – 1,596,331 people (up by 36,207);Zhambyl Region – 1,215,373 people (down by 7,018);Shymkent – 1,293,648 people (up by 37,484);
Karaganda Region – 1,131,287 people (down by 2,646).
The least populated regions are:
Ulytau Region – 218,993 people (down by 2,297);North Kazakhstan Region – 514,156 people (down by 8,015);Abai Region – 595,676 people (down by 7,156).
As of 1 January 2026, 13,029,803 Kazakhstanis lived in urban areas (an increase of 256,688), while 7,466,172 lived in rural areas (a decrease of 44,112).
