Convicted man attempted to escape from Semey hospital
Tengrinews.kz - A convicted man in Semey, who was hospitalized due to deteriorating health, attempted to escape, the Committee of the Criminally-Executive System of the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed to Tengrinews.kz.
According to the committee’s press service, the inmate had been placed in a civilian medical facility when he tried to flee.
"As a result of swift measures, he was immediately detained," the statement read.
A departmental investigation has been launched, and a criminal case has been initiated.
Under Article 426 of Kazakhstan's Criminal Code, attempting to escape from detention or a correctional facility is punishable by three to six years in prison.
Reports on social media and in the media claimed that the escaped inmate had been serving a 15-year sentence for the rape of a minor. The Department of the Criminally-Executive System in the Abai region confirmed to Tengrinews.kz that the man had been convicted under Part 3 of Article 120 of the Criminal Code, which carries a sentence of 12 to 15 years in prison.
Previously, the National Security Committee department in Almaty, in coordination with the prosecutor's office, uncovered a drug laboratory.
