Researchers uncovered how coffee affects gut bacteria

0

Tengrinews.kz - Regular coffee consumption can increase the population of potentially beneficial gut bacteria, specifically Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the Washington University School of Medicine, with the findings published in Nature Microbiology, according to Gazeta.ru.

The study involved approximately 77,000 participants from various countries. Initially, volunteers provided detailed information about their diets, with a particular focus on coffee consumption habits. They were also asked to submit stool samples for gut microbiota analysis.

Comparative analysis revealed significant differences in the gut microbiome between coffee drinkers and non-drinkers. Those who consumed coffee regularly were found to have Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus levels eight times higher than those who avoided coffee. This trend was consistent regardless of participants' geographic location.

While the exact implications of elevated L. asaccharolyticus levels on human health remain unclear, researchers suggest the phenomenon may contribute to the positive effects of coffee, which have been documented in numerous studies.

Previously, scientists found that instant coffee could accelerate aging by affecting the length of telomeres - structures at the ends of chromosomes. In contrast, brewed coffee from ground beans does not have the same effect.
