Tengrinews.kz - An Indian tourist complained about a taxi driver in Almaty who charged her 77,000 tenge for a ride from the airport to the city. The case became known through social media.
According to Indian blogger Komal Maheshwari, she arrived in Almaty late at night and couldn’t find any kiosks selling SIM cards at the airport. Unable to connect to the local Wi-Fi and use a taxi-hailing service, she encountered a man in the airport who politely offered to take her for 1,000 tenge. However, when she arrived at her destination, the taxi driver demanded 77,000 tenge. The tourist claims that the driver behaved aggressively, which frightened her significantly. As a result, she paid him 30,000 tenge for the ride from the airport.

The Almaty police have detained a 27-year-old man and placed him in a temporary detention facility.

"During the investigation, it was found that the man was engaged in private transportation without the necessary documents and was imposing his services. Additionally, he did not comply with the legal requirements of the police officer during his detention," the press service of the Almaty Police Department reported.

By the decision of the specialized inter-district administrative court of Almaty, the offender has been sentenced to 15 days of administrative detention.
