World number one and three-time defending champion Serena Williams crashed out of the Miami Open on Monday, falling to Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 (3/7), 6-1, 6-2.

The 34-year-old American, a 21-time Grand Slam champion, was seeking her ninth career Miami crown but instead matched her earliest-ever exit at the ATP and WTA hardcourt event.
