Bernie Ecclestone, the visionary who transformed Formula 1 from a niche sport into a global multi-billion-dollar power house, was celebrated in style at the star-studded Autosport Awards on Wednesday evening.

Held at London’s historic Roundhouse in Camden, the glamorous event set the stage for a year commemorating the 75th anniversary of both Autosport and the FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

It was a fitting occasion to pay tribute to Ecclestone’s six-decade-long contribution to motorsport, which has left an indelible mark on the industry.

A Transformative Legacy

The 94-year-old former F1 supremo was presented with Autosport’s prestigious 75th Anniversary Trophy in a heartfelt ceremony led by Martin Brundle.

The award was handed over by Piero Ferrari, son of the legendary Enzo Ferrari, with additional tributes from His Grace The Duke of Richmond, Lennox, and Gordon, underscoring the immense impact Ecclestone has had on the sport.

The trophy itself – a meticulously crafted scale model of Giuseppe Farina’s Alfa Romeo 158, the car that claimed victory in the first-ever Formula 1 World Championship round in 1950 – symbolized the rich history of the sport Ecclestone helped shape.

A Humble Reflection on an Extraordinary Career

Receiving the accolade with his characteristic blend of humility and wit, Ecclestone reflected on his illustrious career.

“I think I’ve been bloody lucky,” he admitted. “I think it is a case of having people supporting. If they see what you are doing is reasonably correct, they will support you – I think that is what happened.

Despite his towering influence on Formula 1, Ecclestone downplayed his individual achievements, emphasizing the collective effort that propelled the sport forward.

"It is difficult to remember, everyone has been so kind and nice and helpful, so I wouldn’t want to pick out a number one," he said.

In a lighthearted moment, he added: “Remember, I used to leave halfway through the race when I used to have a team or otherwise as I had done my job, so I left. I’ve never been on a podium in my life. I never won anything!”

A Night of Celebration

The Autosport Awards also recognized the finest talents in contemporary motorsport, with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris among the standout winners.
Verstappen, the dominant force of the 2024 season, took home two fan-voted accolades, including the prestigious International Racing Driver of the Year award.

Meanwhile, Norris was celebrated as British Competition Driver of the Year, affirming his rise as one of the brightest stars in the sport.

As the motorsport world looks ahead to another thrilling season, the legacy of Bernie Ecclestone remains an enduring cornerstone of Formula 1’s success – a testament to a man who never stood on a podium but built the very foundations upon which champions stand.
