Porsche’s Wehrlein seals Formula E world title in London

0

The 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E campaign concluded in a heart-stopping finale at the London ExCeL circuit on Sunday, with TAG Heuer Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein emerging as the all-electric series’ new World Champion.

Going into the final race, the championship battle was wide open, with Wehrlein, Jaguar's Mitch Evans, and teammate Nick Cassidy all within striking distance, separated by a mere seven points.

Cassidy, after a pointless effort in Portland, had fought his way back into contention with a seventh-place finish on Saturday and pole position for Sunday’s race. The Kiwi initially led the field, with Evans right behind, but cracks began to show in Jaguar's strategy.

Evans pushed for a more aggressive approach, while Cassidy struggled with the ATTACK MODE activations, falling behind both Wehrlein and his teammate.

The drama intensified when Oliver Rowland rocketed from ninth on the grid to snatch third place from Cassidy, who subsequently collided with Maserati’s Maximilian Guenther, puncturing his tyre and ending his championship dream.

Mitch Evans, Jaguar TCS Racing battles with Pascal Wehrlein, TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team.

With Evans and Wehrlein still needing to take their ATTACK MODE activations, the lead bounced between them due to a series of penalties and safety car interventions.

A crucial moment arrived on lap 34. Evans failed to activate his ATTACK MODE, handing the lead back to Rowland. Wehrlein, however, successfully activated his and sailed past both Evans and Rowland, cementing his position as the championship leader.

Evans, despite a valiant effort later, couldn't catch Wehrlein, who crossed the finish line second behind race winner Rowland.

This emotional victory secured Wehrlein's first Formula E Drivers' World Championship title by a narrow seven-point margin over Evans.

While Jaguar missed out on the driver's title, they did manage to secure the Teams' World Championship, their first major motorsport title since 1991.

Porsche, meanwhile, celebrated a double win, adding the inaugural Manufacturers' Trophy to Wehrlein's driver's championship crown. The 2023/24 Formula E season came to a close in a thrilling climax, leaving fans with plenty to remember as the series heads into the GEN3 era.
