Arteta gets major boost as Saliba ends Real Madrid speculation with new deal

William Saliba has signed a new five-year contract with Arsenal, committing his future to the club until 2030.

The French defender had two years left on his previous deal, but Arsenal moved to secure his long-term future after months of negotiations. Talks began in May and were concluded in recent weeks, ending speculation about interest from Real Madrid.

Saliba, who turned 24 in March, has developed into one of the cornerstones of Mikel Arteta’s side since returning from his loan spell at Marseille in 2022. His presence has been central to a defence that has conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League across the past two seasons.

The centre-back has made 140 appearances for Arsenal since joining from Saint-Etienne in 2019. He initially spent time on loan with Saint-Etienne, Nice, and Marseille before making his competitive debut for the Gunners in August 2022.

Saliba’s performances have earned him recognition beyond the club level. He has been named in the PFA Team of the Year in each of the last three campaigns and was also included in The Best FIFA Men’s 11 in 2024.

Speaking after the deal was announced, Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta praised Saliba’s development and importance to the team. He described him as one of the best defenders in the world and said the new contract was a reflection of his growth and influence.

Mikel Arteta also welcomed the extension, highlighting the bond Saliba has formed with teammates, staff, and supporters. The Arsenal manager stressed that the defender has embraced responsibility and still has further levels to reach as the club pursues major trophies.

For Saliba himself, the ambition remains clear. Earlier this year he underlined his desire to win silverware in north London, saying he wanted to achieve success at Arsenal rather than leave without delivering titles.

He also spoke of his personal aim to become the best defender in the world, insisting he must continue working hard to achieve that goal.

The new deal ensures Arsenal can continue building their defensive unit around Saliba as they look to maintain their push for honours domestically and in Europe.

Arsenal are back in action on Wednesday night when they face Olympiacos in the Champions League group stage.
