Das stalinistische Nordkorea ist international nicht unbedingt als Seemacht bekannt, leistet sich aber sehr wohl eine größere Marine. Sie umfasst mehr als 160 kleine Patrouillen- und Raketenboote, eine Handvoll Fregatten und Korvetten – und immerhin 35 U-Boote. Ein geplanter Neuzugang in der U-Boot-Flotte sorgt beim südkoreanischen Geheimdienst für Nervosität.
