Identity of human remains found in Almaty mountains revealed

0

Tengrinews.kz — It has been revealed whose remains were recently found by tourists in the mountains of Almaty Region.
Almaty resident Nellya Mikheeva posted a series of videos on Instagram Stories saying that the remains found in the mountains belonged to her father. He apparently went into the mountains in 2007 and never returned.

“Today is both a tragic and, in a way, joyful day for our family. After 19 years, my father’s remains have been found. The Severtsov Glacier melted. Thank you to the tourists from Belarus who did not simply pass by and who found my father’s remains and backpack,” the Almaty resident said.

The woman said that a friend sent her a photo from a post about the remains found in the mountains. She recognized her father’s backpack, and later her husband sent her the same post.

“It really is my father’s backpack. It is an old Soviet external-frame backpack. The chances that someone else could have gone into the mountains with the same type of backpack in 2007 are very small,” she said.

Nellya contacted the rescuers who had brought the body and belongings down from the mountains, and then got in touch with police.

“The rescuers gave me the investigator’s phone number, and we spoke. The investigator asked me to send all the documents and everything we had. I sent all the documents and photos showing the backpack from when we were in the mountains. He called back later and said that my father’s ID had been found inside the backpack,” the woman said.

The tourists immediately contacted rescuers. They said a Kazaviaspas aircraft from the Ministry of Emergency Situations had been dispatched to the site with rescuers from the Barys Republican Operational Rescue Squad and the ministry’s Center for Disaster Medicine.
On the evening of August 19, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that rescuers had evacuated the body of the tourist who died in the mountains of Almaty Region.

After the evacuation, the body was handed over to an investigative team from Almaty Region to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the circumstances of what happened.
