Severe frosts to hit Kazakhstan: Emergency Ministry issues warning

Tengrinews.kz – A number of regions in Kazakhstan are expected to see sharp weather changes from 6 to 8 February: severe frosts, squally winds, precipitation, blizzards, ice and fog, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reports.

Sharp cold snap

On 6 February, a significant drop in temperature is forecast in Aktobe, Kostanay, North Kazakhstan, Akmola, Kyzylorda, Turkistan and Zhambyl regions. Nighttime temperatures in some areas will fall to -23…-28°C, and in northern and western districts down to -26…-28°C.

In Aktobe, nighttime temperatures are expected to reach -23…-25°C. In Petropavlovsk, the temperature will drop to -20…-22°C at night and -15…-17°C during the day. In Kokshetau, nighttime temperatures are forecast at around -18…-20°C.

On 7 February, the frost will intensify in Akmola region, Ulytau region, Karaganda and Pavlodar regions. In Astana, nighttime temperatures are expected to reach -18…-20°C.

On 8 February, a further drop in temperature is forecast in Abay region and East Kazakhstan region — down to -15…-20°C at night.

Strong winds and storm gusts

On 6 February, hazardous wind events are expected in Zhambyl, Turkistan, Abay and Zhetisu regions. Wind speeds will reach 15–20 m/s, with gusts in some places up to 30 m/s and higher.

In Taraz and Shymkent, squally wind gusts with strengthening during the daytime are forecast.

Blizzards and ice

On 6 February, heavy precipitation in the form of rain and snow is expected in Turkistan, Kyzylorda, Zhambyl, Almaty and Zhetysu regions, as well as in a number of central and northern regions.

Blizzard, ice and fog are forecast in Akmola, Pavlodar, Karaganda, North Kazakhstan, Kostanay, East Kazakhstan regions and Ulytau region.

In Astana, precipitation is expected, at times heavy snow, with ice and ground blizzard and wind gusts up to 20 m/s.
