'Sinners' Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw Makes History as First Female Oscar Winner For Best Cinematography
Autumn Durald Arkapaw just made history at the 2026 Academy Awards on Sunday (March 15) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
The 46-year-old cinematographer picked up the win for Best Cinematography for her work on the hit movie Sinners!
This historic moment marks the first time a woman has ever won the award in that category. Only three other women have been nominated in the category – Mudbound‘s Rachel Morrison, The Power of the Dog‘s Ari Wegner and Elvis‘ Mandy Walker.
During her acceptance speech, Autumn took a moment to ask all the women in the room to stand up, noting she wouldn’t be where she is today without them.
Sinners also made history at the Oscars this year, with the most nominations for a singular film, with 16. The film also picked up awards for Best Original Screenplay for writer/director Ryan Coogler, and Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson.
