22 Years Ago Today, This Iconic 'Cult Classic' Movie Premiered

0

Many people think of the term "cult classic" describing films that gain a following years after they are released without making an immediate commercial impact.

That's not the case with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The 2004 sci-fi romantic drama, starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, was a box office and critical success upon release, and over two decades later maintains a loyal crop of devoted fans.

On this day 22 years ago--March 9, 2004--Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind premiered in Los Angeles, 10 days before it opened in theaters nationwide.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was an instant success

According to Box Office Mojo, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind earned $8,175,198 in its opening weekend and over $73,314,326 in total worldwide. Not bad for a movie with a $20 million budget.

Directed by Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kaufman, the film was named one of the top 10 films of 2004 by the American Film Institute. Gondry, Kaufman and Pierre Bismuth won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, while Winslet was nominated for Best Actress.

In total, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was nominated for 97 different honors, winning 34. In 2017, the New York Times rated it one of the top films of the 21st century to that point.

In addition to starring Carrey and Winslet, the film also featured Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Wilkinson.

The movie has had a lasting effect

Not only has Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind served as an inspiration and reference point for various musicians for years, the movie's central theme of memory erasure still resonates with actresses like Alexandra Daddario, who explained the film's impact on her in a 2022 interview with Men's Journal.

“I’ve had that long-term relationship when you know it’s wrong but it’s really hard to leave," Daddario said. "It’s very sad, it’s very profound. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a perfect example; it’s letting go of the beautiful moments and the love you had. But I don’t think you have to let it go. It can still exist and you can still move on, and I think that’s something you learn as you get older."

If you wish to stream Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, you're in luck, as the film is widely available on subscription platforms, including Hulu, Disney+, Peacock and Amazon Prime Video.
