1996 No. 1 Hit Ranked ‘Greatest Adult Alternative Song of All Time’ Became a Timeless Classic
"One Headlight" by The Wallflowers has been ranked by Billboard as the greates "adult alternative song" ever recorded, beating huge names like Coldplay and Train to the #1 spot.
The subgenre is defined by Lunar Boom as one that "that blends elements of rock, pop, and folk" and "...is characterized by its appeal to adult listeners, often featuring introspective lyrics and a polished sound that is more mature than mainstream pop."
The Wallflowers' Number One Single Topped Billboard's Charts
At the time of release, "One Headlight" was the first song to reach the top spot on all three of Billboard's rock charts: Mainstream Rock, Modern Rock, and Triple-A (Adult Alternative Airplay).
The song was released as the lead single from the band's critically acclaimed album Bringing Down the Horse, charting at number one and remaining in pole position in Canada for five weeks.
Alongside topping Billboard's adult alternative list, "One Headlight" was listed at No. 58 on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Pop Songs of All Time". It's safe to say The Wallflowers scored an all-time classic with this heavy, emotional rock ballad.
Narrowly missing out on Billboard's top spot were Coldplay's "Clocks", Matchbox 20's "3 AM", Portugal. The Man's "Feel it Still", and Train's "Drops of Jupiter".
The Wallflowers' frontman Jakob Dylan gave an interview to Billboard following the accomplishment, reflecting on the huge success of his 30-year-old song. "I can still listen to it and say 'damn, that was pretty f**king good'," he admitted.
"I recall believing the song had a lot of potential. I wasn’t sure if we were quite good enough to explore its possibilities," Dylan said. “It’s hard to ask someone 25 years later what they felt or what they meant at the time. Sometimes you just follow your nose and you get to reinterpret it year after year, so I sing it now and I don’t sing it like somebody who’s 25 years old. It’s a different song to me now. Because I’m different.”
"One Headlight" remains The Wallfrlowers' most successful song by a significant margin, with 419,311,082 streams on Spotify at time of publication. Songs from Bringing Down the Horse make up the band's four most-streamed songs ever, with singles "6th Avenue Heartache" and "Three Marlenas" pulling in upwards of 60 million and 39 million, respectively.
