Iran’s Temporary Leadership Council Begins Work, President Says

0

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that the country’s temporary leadership council has officially begun its duties following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In his first video message since Khamenei’s death, broadcast Sunday on state television, Pezeshkian said the council started work earlier in the day.

Pezeshkian stated that the council would continue Khamenei’s path “with strength and determination” until a permanent successor is chosen. He emphasized stability and unity during what he described as a sensitive period for the country.

The temporary leadership council consists of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei, and senior cleric Alireza Arafi. The body is tasked with assuming the responsibilities of the Supreme Leader until the Assembly of Experts appoints a successor.

Khamenei was killed following reported U.S. and Israeli strikes on his residence in Tehran a day earlier, according to Iranian authorities. His death has triggered a formal transition process under Iran’s constitutional framework.

Under Iran’s constitution, a provisional leadership arrangement is formed upon the death of a Supreme Leader, with senior officials overseeing duties until a new leader is selected.

Clips of Pezeshkian’s televised address quickly circulated on social media platforms, drawing reactions from supporters and critics both inside and outside Iran.
