Amazon's Grand Tour Is Back With Three New Hosts

0

Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond shaped automotive culture and TV entertainment in a massive way, from the original Top Gear through to the trio's days as hosts of the Amazon-run The Grand Tour. However, the three have all moved on (both in years and in new media ventures), leaving an opportunity to feed new blood into Amazon's popular car-centric TV series. Enter new hosts: Thomas Holland and James Engelsman of ThrottleHouse, an automotive reviews channel on YouTube, and Francis Bourgeois, host of his own self-titled trainspotting TikTok page.

Simply put, there are no bigger shoes to fill. At least, where car-themed TV is concerned. At one point, Top Gear was the most-watched show on TV. Following a long, storied career, the three have now moved on. Clarkson, Hammond, and May all host or have hosted their own TV ventures largely relevant to their interests, but have said previously that the travel and physical demands of shooting shows like Top Gear and The Grand Tour have taken their toll. The trio previously announced the end of their run on the latter two years ago after a final adventure in Africa.

The new Grand Tour hosts bring fresh blood to the series

Franics Bourgeois said: “The saying ‘big shoes to fill’ spring to mind. Well, in this case it’ll be like Mo Farah running in Size 14 wellies — it’ll be a little awkward at first, perhaps blister inducing but will overall be an interesting watch." The series will run for six total episodes, according to Amazon, with the new hosts exploring everything from "the Angolan desert in track cars to exploring Malaysia’s vibrant car culture, before heading to California to test cutting-edge America’s latest and greatest performance cars."

The studio said it aims to "honour the show’s legacy while driving it into a new era." The producer of The Grand Tour and ex-Top Gear brain trust member Andy Wilman said:“We are properly happy to hand over the baton to Thomas, James and Francis, because quite simply - they are doing it right. Not only do they have passion and knowledge, but more importantly they are in no way cardboard cutouts of the old three. They have a delightful chemistry that's all of their own making.”

Chemistry will be a massive part of making the dynamic work, as the cars never really made Top Gear, The Grand Tour, or any other automotive show work well. They are very literal vehicles for the relationship between the hosts, and in an unscripted format, that working will be key to the appeal of the new show. As for when the new show will debut, there's only a 2026 air date to go off. Further teasers, trailers, and a specific release date will surely be coming soon.
