The project confronts a fundamental paradox in heritage architecture – how to honor a building’s historic presence when its interior fabric has been irreparably compromised through successive interventions. Rather than attempting archaeological reconstruction or creating invented memories of spaces that never existed, the approach charts a third path that acknowledges loss while establishing a new material honesty.

The cottage presented itself with four distinctive wolf roofs, angular forms that dictated the building’s external character and ultimately shaped the interior reorganization. These existing roof geometries became the organizing principle for the upper floor, where four guest rooms now occupy spaces carved from the historic envelope. Each room negotiates its relationship with the sloped ceiling planes, transforming structural constraints into spatial character. The exterior shell, though weathered, maintained sufficient integrity to guide the restoration, providing a framework within which contemporary needs could be carefully inserted.

Downstairs, the angular kitchen extension received a complete redesign that eliminates the awkward addition while establishing clear functional zones. The new kitchen and adjacent dining room acknowledge the cottage’s domestic scale while accommodating the programmatic requirements of a guesthouse. The layout emerges from pragmatic decisions about circulation, service areas, and guest interaction rather than imposed formal concepts.

The interior treatment develops a material vocabulary that bridges historical and contemporary sensibilities without resorting to nostalgic reproduction. Recovered materials appear throughout, chosen not for their ability to simulate original finishes but for the temporal depth they carry. These elements – worn timber, reclaimed stone, weathered surfaces – introduce tactile evidence of age without theatrical artifice. New insertions maintain deliberate restraint in color, finish, and detailing, creating dialogue rather than competition with the building’s historic fabric.

This restraint extends to the furniture selections, which favor muted tones and vintage pieces that respect the spatial character without demanding attention. The choices avoid both decorator eclecticism and museum-quality period pieces, instead seeking objects that feel appropriate to the domestic scale and use patterns of a functioning guesthouse. Contemporary comfort requirements appear through updated mechanical systems, modern bathroom fittings, and improved insulation, implemented with minimal visual disruption.
