Babies are among 53 dead or missing after a migrant boat sinks off Libya, UN says

The U.N. migration agency says a shipwreck off Libya's coast has left at least 53 Europe-bound migrants dead or missing. The inflatable boat carrying 55 African migrants sank on Friday after departing from the town of Zawaiya on Thursday night. The agency says two Nigerian women on board survived the shipwreck and were rescued by Libyan authorities. One of them said she lost her husband, while the other reported losing her two babies. Libya remains a key transit point for migrants fleeing war and poverty. The incident raises the 2026 death toll on the central Mediterranean route to at least 484.
