UN Chief Urges Action to End Female Genital Mutilation, Says Over 4 Million Girls at Risk Each Year

UN chief urges global action to end female genital mutilation, warning millions of women and girls face lifelong harm worldwide annually still.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said female genital mutilation (FGM) is a clear violation of universal human rights and harms the lives and health of women and girls.

Writing on social media, Guterres noted that more than 230 million women and girls worldwide have suffered lasting damage from the practice.

“In 2026 alone, an estimated 4.5 million girls—many under the age of five—are at risk of undergoing female genital mutilation. Currently, more than 230 million girls and women are living with its consequences.”

He called for renewed global commitment to end the practice, stressing that women and girls must live free from violence and fear.

Despite legal bans in many countries, the practice continues in certain communities due to social pressure and long-standing traditions.

Human rights organizations say FGM remains one of the most severe forms of violence against women and girls, often carried out on minors without consent.

International agencies continue awareness campaigns and community programs aimed at protecting girls and changing harmful cultural practices linked to FGM.

Guterres emphasized that global cooperation and education are crucial to protecting future generations from harm and ensuring dignity and safety for women and girls everywhere.
