Your Grubhub Order Just Got Cheaper

0

Famously, food delivery apps offer extreme convenience for a steep price. After all the taxes, random fees, and the tip for your driver, your $10 nachos suddenly cost $25. Now you've lost your appetite.

As food prices rise and Americans find themselves cutting back their spending, Grubhub is hoping to ease the pain and entice more people to order out through its service.

Grubhub Gets Rid of Delivery Fee on $50+ Orders

Grubhub has eliminated delivery fees on all orders over $50 — which, in this economy, isn't that hard to do. It might be tough for one person to break the $50 threshold, but if you're ordering for two or more people, it's almost impossible not to.

The new policy will be the spotlight of the app's first Super Bowl commercial, which The Favourite and Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos is directing. Perhaps that's what all the old delivery fees went towards.

The company claims the move will save families who order food once a week more than $675 a year. “This benefit is the latest instance of Grubhub’s commitment to delivering better value across the food delivery ecosystem,” Grubhub's CEO, Howard Migdal, told NRN. Fees have been a part of our category, and Grubhub’s own business model, for a long time, but that doesn’t mean we’re afraid to identify new ways to pursue better value, even if it means challenging industry norms.”

Migdal's language implies that he thinks Grubhub's competitors, like DoorDash and Uber Eats, may follow suit. If they do, it will almost certainly be a hit with consumers, as there is many a thread on social media complaining about both apps' high fees.

"What's with the obnoxiously high delivery fees?" one Reddit user wrote after being hit with an $8.95 delivery fee from McDonald's. "You can literally order the Mcdonald’s app for a way lower delivery fee too, this is just pointless."
