US clears potential $1.7B mid‑life upgrade sale for Spain’s Álvaro de Bazán-class frigates

0

The US State Department has formally approved a potential foreign military sale (FMS) to Spain, authorizing the modernization of five Spanish Álvaro de Bazán-class (F-100) frigates at an estimated cost of $1.7 billion.

Under the deal, Spain is expected to acquire five AEGIS weapon system shipsets, six digital signal processor shipsets, five MK 41 baseline VIII vertical launching systems, and five next-generation surface search radar shipsets.

In addition, a wide array of support equipment and services will be included, ranging from ultra-high-frequency satellite communications systems and advanced GPS receivers to torpedo tube upgrades, MK 45 gun weapon system support, and classified software and technical documentation.

Comprehensive training, contractor logistics support, and US government engineering and technical assistance will also be provided.

“The proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) stated.

The US Government noted that Spain will have no difficulty integrating the equipment and support into its armed forces and emphasized that the sale will not disrupt the existing military balance in the region.

Key contractors involved in the modernization program include Lockheed Martin, RTX Corporation, Ultra Maritime Naval Systems and Sensors, and General Dynamics.

This deal marks a significant investment in Spain’s naval capabilities, aligning with US foreign policy goals of strengthening NATO allies and maintaining stability in strategic regions.

To remind, Spain approved a major mid-life modernization program for its F100 Álvaro de Bazán-class frigates in November last year.
