Louis Saha explains how left-back target could plug Tottenham’s Harry Kane gap

0

Louis Saha has now offered his view on Tottenham Hotspur’s reported interest in Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson.

For a club that received seven-figure backing ahead of the winter transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have not been shy to make signings.

Based on incomings, Tottenham have spent half of the £100 million available following the £35 million signing of Conor Gallagher and the £15 million signing of Santos left-back Souza.

However, given the sale of Brennan Johnson for roughly £34 million, Spurs have realistically spent £15 million and are keen to add to that outlay this window.

Reports claimed that Tottenham were already advancing in a deal to sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool for a reported £3 million, but the move has since stalled, with the Reds not keen on selling their full-back due to the difficulty of finding a replacement.

Louis Saha on Tottenham interest in Andy Robertson

Despite the setback, the Robertson deal is not entirely off for Spurs, who still have a glimmer of hope, and Louis Saha has now shared his opinion on the potential switch.

Speaking to Gambling.com, the former Tottenham and France striker explained why Robertson could be the type of player Spurs are targeting, highlighting his winning mentality and leadership qualities.

He said: “I can see why they are looking at [Andy] Robertson because he’s someone who has felt properly what it’s like to win and he understands the standards that every player has to give back to the club.

“Liverpool is the best example for me. What that club has done to each player in that era of winning was amazing. From [Mohamed] Salah to Robertson or Trent [Alexander-Arnold] was amazing.

“Virgil van Dijk obviously represented that in a better, consistent way and more loyal way. Robertson would provide a kind of captain that Tottenham need and he would maybe challenge potentially good players coming to the club.

“He is a hardcore top player that has done it to the very highest-profile standards. It makes sense to me, because that is what they want. They need more players like this.

“So for many, many years Arsenal and Tottenham have been accused of bringing good players, but not world-class players with massive intention to win trophies and do the best for the remaining years.

“So, I do think that they need at least four or five players like this now. They have good players, but they need the Harry Kanes back – those types of players that know how to win.

“And this is the thing that Arsenal did for so many years which was not working. Now, for some reason, they get away with it with all the corners they win. But for me, there is a big need for this kind of expensive player to win trophies. It is vital.”

What Andy Robertson would add to Spurs

Indeed, Tottenham do need experience in their squad, and recent windows have shown the club targeting players with that quality.

The signings of Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha and Xavi Simons represent players who have the know-how of performing week in, week out in the Premier League and in Europe.

There is no doubt that Robertson would bring even more experience given his illustrious career, but if a deal continues to prove difficult, Spurs will need to move on quickly and strengthen other areas of the squad, with the Liverpool man set to be available for free this summer.
