A timeline of two towns on the Arizona-Utah border once controlled by a polygamist sect

The neighboring towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona, have transformed in the years since Warren Jeffs led a polygamous sect there. Jeffs controlled nearly every aspect of life for the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, from the way people dressed to the town governments and police forces. Jeff's imprisonment in 2011 and the U.S. Department of Justice's 2016 win in a case that alleged nonbelievers were being discriminated against marked major turns in the towns' history. The DOJ case led to an overhaul of the towns' governments to uphold constitutional rights with regular monitoring. After making major strides, the towns are free from court supervision. Walls — literally — have come down, and many FLDS followers moved away and newcomers moved in.
