Tottenham's latest transfer plan makes perfect sense with Kolo Muani upgrade targeted - Opinion
Say it quietly, but Tottenham could actually be about to do two really smart things in the transfer window before it closes on Monday.
Time is running out for Spurs to turn this window into a success, with only Conor Gallagher and Souza through the door so far.
With the Andy Robertson deal up in the air and talk of Sam Johnstone joining as back-up goalkeeper, there’s not a lot to be excited about, either.
However, news of Spurs targeting Jean-Philippe Mateta is actually really positive, especially if it has the desired domino effect of pushing Randal Kolo Muani out the door.
Tottenham should send Randal Kolo Muani back and sign Jean-Philippe Mateta
It’s thought Mateta might cost around £35m. That’s not a small fee, given his age and the fact that he does sometimes go missing for games at a time. However, the Crystal Palace man has shown his prolific streak plenty in the past two seasons.
With 14 goals last term and another eight so far in 2025/26, it’s hard to deny that Mateta would be a useful signing for the Lilywhites. He’s certainly got better output than any Tottenham player right now.
If you’d have said two years ago that letting Randal Kolo Muani leave and signing Jean-Philippe Mateta was a smart idea, you’d be laughed at. Now, it makes perfect sense.
Kolo Muani’s loan spell at Spurs has been a disaster, frankly. The fact that he is being paid £160,000 per week is just laughable at this point. With Juventus keen to sign Kolo Muani, Tottenham could have a nice, easy escape from the agreement they had with PSG, and they should absolutely take it.
Kolo Muani has been a massive disappointment for Spurs
When Spurs signed Kolo Muani in the summer, I think it’s fair to say we were all a little excited. Sure, he’s had injury issues and struggled for form at times, but on his day, the Frenchman is a top, top talent.
The problem is, we just haven’t seen that at all in the last six months. One thing’s for sure: Spurs should not sign Kolo Muani permanently. And with that in mind, we might as well call it quits now and send him back.
He has just three goals and three assists in 24 games (or 1,328 minutes). That’s an average of just 0.20 goals per 90 minutes, which is simply not good enough.
His shots on target rate is currently at 35%, which is actually not all that bad. But, it’s worth noting that Richarlison and Mateta are both at 42.3% this season.
Yes, Muani played well and scored against Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday, but his good moments have been too few and far between. In fact, none of them have come in the Premier League yet.
It might cost a fair bit to sign Mateta, but Spurs are likely to save in wages and still get themselves a far more productive player who would actually be theirs to keep, too.
