Venezuela releases dozens of prisoners in 2 days, hundreds more still detained
Venezuela’s leading prisoner rights organization says that dozens of prisoners were released over the weekend. The United States continues to pressure the acting government to free hundreds of dissidents jailed during the administration of ousted leader Nicolás Maduro. Alfredo Romero, president of Foro Penal, said Monday that 266 political prisoners have been released since January 8. At least 100 were released over the past two days. However, at least 600 dissidents remain detained, according to Foro Penal. Human rights groups accuse the government of inflating the number of prisoners freed.
