Teenager arrested ‘for murder’ after woman in her 40s dies in altercation
A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 40s died in an altercation, police have said.
The woman reportedly sustained serious injuries in a suspected assault.
Paramedics were called to Russell Street in the North Shields area, North Tyneside, at 10pm on Saturday after there was ‘concern for the welfare of a woman’.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of murder, while a woman in her 50s has been arrested on suspicion of assisting the offender, Northumbria Police said.

In a statement, the force said: ‘Sadly, despite the efforts of medical staff, she died a short time later.’
Police have contacted the victim’s family and are being supported by specialist officers.
An investigation is ongoing as police determine the details of the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, from the force’s Major Investigation Team, said: ‘Firstly, our thoughts remain firmly with the family and loved ones of the woman who has died.
‘We will continue to provide them with any support they need following this tragic incident.
‘An investigation has now been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the woman’s death.”
He added that a police cordon remains in place and officers are patrolling the area, and urged people to avoid speculating online.
He said: ‘If you have any information, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, please get in touch.
‘I’d also like to take this opportunity to urge people to refrain from sharing speculation on social media which could jeopardise our active enquiries.’
