Jennifer Lawrence Claims She Lost Out On Oscar-Nominated Role For Not Being 'Pretty Enough'
Jennifer Lawrence has claimed she lost out on a role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood for not being “pretty enough”.
In the mid-2010s, it was widely rumoured that the Oscar winner was in consideration to play Sharon Tate in the most recent Tarantino movie, a role which ended up going to Margot Robbie.
During an appearance on the podcast Happy Sad Confused last week, Jen was asked if it was true that the award-winning filmmaker had wanted her to play Sharon Tate in his movie.
“Well, he did,” she responded. “And then everybody was like, ‘She’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate’.
”I’m pretty sure it is true – or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling the story this way for so long that I believe it. No, but I’m pretty sure that happened.”
“Or he just was never considering me for the part, and the internet just, like, went out of their way to call me ugly,” she then quipped.
In 2017, Sharon Tate’s sister Debra told TMZ: “Both [Margot and Jennifer are] extremely accomplished actresses, but I would have to say my pick would be Margot, simply because of her physical beauty, and the way she even carries herself is similar to that of Sharon.”
She continued: “I don’t think as much about Jennifer Lawrence, not that I have anything against her, but she just… I don’t know. She’s not pretty enough to play Sharon. That’s a horrible thing to say, but you know, I have my standards.
“The physical beauty wouldn’t be so important, but Sharon’s six years of her public life were all based on that incredibly beautiful, natural, perfect look in both soul, heart and spirit. So that’s what I’m looking to try to capture.”
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was set in the film industry in a reimagined late 1960s, and reimagined the events of Sharon Tate’s murder at the hands of Charles Manson.
Margot was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work as Sharon Tate in the film, one of 10 nods the film received, with Brad Pitt scooping Best Supporting Actor and the movie also picking up Best Production Design.
Elsewhere in her Happy Sad Confused interview, the former Hunger Games star revealed she turned down an appearance in another of Tarantino’s movies, The Hateful Eight.
“I should not have done [that],” she conceded.
Tarantino previously told the podcast WTF With Marc Maron that he’d considered Jennifer for the role of Manson cult member Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, before giving the part to Dakota Fanning.
“Something didn’t work out,” the director said, but insisted Jen is a “very nice person” that he “respects [as] an actress”.
