'Explains so much': Analysts stunned by Trump admin 'rewarding' ICE's bad behavior

0

Political analysts and observers were stunned on Sunday by a new report that appeared to explain why President Donald Trump's immigration officials act as if they can't be held accountable for their actions.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers receive a bonus if they meet their 3,000 arrests per day quota, even if the people they arrest are later released. About 2,000 people have been arrested in Minneapolis since federal agents surged into the city this month, the report added, although it is unclear how many people were later released.

It was published at a time when videos of immigration officers snatching people off the streets continued to pile up. Debate about Trump's immigration policies intensified after Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother from Minneapolis, was killed by ICE agent Jonathan Ross while she was leaving the scene of an immigration raid in her neighborhood.

Analysts and observers shared their reactions to the report on social media.

"Explains so much," Randy Schulman, editor of Metro Weekly, posted on X.

"The Trump administration is rewarding ICE goons for their f--- ups," Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) posted on X. "Mistakenly arrest a US citizen? You get a big fat bonus."

"I'm not a compensation expert but quotas for arrests strikes me as a bad idea," consultant Dave Kellog posted on X.
