Thomas Frank says Tottenham player’s performance vs Sunderland was ‘a big positive’
Thomas Frank has singled out a Tottenham Hotspur star for praise after his side’s 1-1 draw against Sunderland.
There were some promising signs for the Lilywhites in the first period as they pressed their opposition up the pitch and created chances.
However, Tottenham Hotspur reverted to type in the second half, dropping back further and further, with Sunderland getting an equaliser on 80 minutes after a period of dominance.
Despite seeing his side drop two points at home, the Spurs head coach admits that he was thoroughly impressed by the performance of one player.
Thomas Frank admits he was very happy with Tottenham forward
The Dane decided to hand Mathys Tel his first start since the start of October. The France U21 international started on the left, with his compatriot Wilson Odobert being shifted to the number ten role.
While Tel did not get on the scoresheet, he looked threatening on the ball in the first period, driving forward positively whenever he received it outwide.
When asked about the former Bayern Munich man’s performance, Frank told Football.London: “Yeah, I’m very happy with Mathys stepping in and looking very positive. That was a big positive, I would say.”
Have Spurs changed their mind on Tel’s future?
It has been reported over recent weeks that Tel is attracting interest from S Roma, who have allegedly identified him as one of their top targets.
It was even suggested by Alasdair Gold a couple of days ago that Tottenham could be open to loaning out the 20-year-old so that he can get valuable game time under his belt.
However, one suspects that Tel’s bright performance against Sunderland may have caused Frank and the Spurs decision-makers to reconsider, with the youngster showing enough to warrant more opportunities.
