UK, France Conduct Airstrikes on ISIS Underground Facility in Syria

0

British and French fighter jets struck an underground ISIS facility in Syria, successfully hitting targets without harming civilians, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that Royal Air Force jets, alongside French aircraft, carried out airstrikes Saturday evening on an underground facility in Syria used by ISIS. The operation was deemed successful, with all planes returning safely and no civilian casualties reported.

The strikes employed precision-guided Paveway IV bombs to seal the facility’s entrances, preventing potential use by terrorist operatives. Initial assessments indicate the targeted site was effectively neutralized.

RAF aircraft continue to patrol Syrian airspace to prevent any resurgence of ISIS, which was militarily defeated in 2019, the ministry added. The operation underscores the UK’s ongoing commitment to regional security alongside international partners.

John Healy, the UK Defence Secretary, emphasized that the mission reflects Britain’s leadership and determination to counter violent extremist ideologies in the Middle East.

The underground facility was located in mountainous terrain several miles north of the historic Palmyra site, an area previously exploited by ISIS for strategic operations. Intelligence monitoring and analysis enabled the identification and precision targeting of the site.

This airstrike forms part of a broader coalition effort, including the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure and limiting recruitment and operational capabilities across Syria and Iraq.

ISIS remnants have increasingly attempted to regroup in remote areas of Syria and Iraq, taking advantage of challenging terrain and local instability. Recent intelligence reports highlighted growing activity, prompting the preemptive strikes.

Military analysts have praised the operation as a demonstration of combined allied capabilities, noting the effectiveness of precision-guided munitions in minimizing collateral damage.

The UK Ministry of Defence affirmed that continued surveillance and rapid response will remain a priority to prevent any future ISIS resurgence. Collaborative international operations are expected to continue in coordination with Syrian partners and allies.

Officials highlighted the importance of sustained counter-terrorism efforts, underlining that neutralizing such facilities is critical for regional stability and global security, reinforcing the message that extremist groups will face persistent opposition.
