However, there was one major couple fans didn’t get an update on in the final hours of the series.
Noticeably, the series finale did not include Robin’s girlfriend Vickie, played by Amybeth McNulty. She was not seen on-screen or mentioned at all, leaving the status of her relationship with Robin unclear.
According to show creators Matt and Ross Duffer, this was intentional. They “did talk” about where Vickie might fit into things, but decided to viewers decide.
“We do that flash-forward in Mike’s story and we bring them up to a certain point, and then we want to leave it a little bit up to fans in terms of where these characters end up ultimately,” Ross told Entertainment Weekly. “Do Robin and Vickie stay together? Maybe, maybe not.”
Matt had a more cynical outlook.
“From my point of view and from everyone I knew in high school, what percentage of couples remain together after they leave for college? Extremely low,” he says. “Max and Lucas survive because their love is that deep, but very few others do.”
“But,” Matt added, “you never know.”
The Duffer brothers also left the fate of Dustin and Suzie pretty ambiguous since Suzie’s character doesn’t appear at all in season 5.
Then there’s the fate of Eleven, which seemed set in stone by around the halfway point of the episode, only to get a little bit of a twist at the end. The creators talked about her fate, too. Read more here.
